Mădălina Dan is a choreographer and performer from and based in Romania. Her artistic research blurs boundaries between art, work and life.

Recent works include: The Agency of Touch — a project on tactile choreographies that bridge therapeutic and artistic contexts;  Patosphere — a study of iridescence, fitness classes, cosmology, trap music, ants, and technology, towards destabilising anthropocentrism.

For her residency at Agatha Falls, Dan will develop and present a new work based on a study of affect, voice and physicality related to emotional environments.

In 2015 Dan received the National Center for Dance Bucharest Award, and in 2016 was Associate Artist of the NCDB, where she now works in the mentoring program. Her work has been presented at Spring Dance Festival Utrecht, Balkan Dance Platform – Novi Sad, eXplore Dance Festival – Bucharest, Temps d’Images – Cluj, SouthBank Center & Chisenhale Dance Space – London, Fabrik Potsdam, Hebbel am Uffer – Berlin, TanzFabrik-Berlin, Tanzquartier Wien, Dance Theater Workshop – New York, Firkin Crane-Cork, Alta Theater – Prague, Art Stations Foundation – Poznan, Sophien Saale – Berlin, FFT Düsseldorf, Impulse Festival- Mulheim, Lyon Dance Biennale, Schauschpiel Leipzig, Hellerau – Dresden, Bozar- Brussels, Sarralves Museum of Contemporary Art- Porto etc.

Dan received her BFA from the National University of Theatrical and Cinematographic Arts in Bucharest in Choreography; a Masters in dramatic writing from UNATC; and a Masters in Solo/Dance/Authorship from the Art University of Berlin, Hochschulübergreifende Zentrum Tanz. Between 1998 and 2003 she was a member of the dance company “Oleg Danovski” in Constanta.

This project is supported by @chashama and The Generator Fund, a grant for artists administered by The Buffalo Institute for Contemporary Art @bica.buffalo and funded by the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts.

AF #4: HOW DID I GET HERE

Workshop with Mădălina Dan
Saturday April 27
1-3pm
*Free

Through movement research we will explore our bodies as if encountering them for the first time.

We will play with voice, mimics, gestures, physicality and affect that are unrecognizable / in between identities, between human and something else.

Dismantling the usual hierarchy of the senses where visual is normally the most prominent — we will use imagination and embodiment to create different modes of being in the world.
